Curious Places

Mmmmkay...Curious Places are links I find fun or useful for whatever reason. The ones in the menu are easy enough. But here are those and more, and why on Earth I would ever tell anyone else to go there:

McSweeney's.net
Open in a new window -- Multiple writers using wonderful varieties in style to provide hilarious insights on our world, from the mundane to the profound.

An Irrational DomainOpen in a new window -- Every last bizarre bit of info about Killing Joke you could ever imagine. Interviews from 1979 to the present. Posters. Tickets. Book excerpts. Everything but the lyrics.

Dear DominikOpen in a new window -- A hilarious blog by an old friend and coworker who's seen a lot and been through more, with a refreshing take on all of it.

White House BriefingOpen in a new window -- Washington Post's Dan Froomkin's half blog, half column, half journal (I know, too many halves) of the daily goings-on around the POTUS (President Of The United States). To follow just how bad and absurd it's gotten, you either have to read the daily White House press briefing transcriptOpen in a new windows (a tiring endeavor), or you can read Froomkin and laugh. And weep.

EschatonOpen in a new window -- One of the most-visited liberal/progressive blogs. Sometimes it's over the top. Sometimes it's right on. I like it because it's updated a lot, so there's always a flow of info, and I can usually decide for myself whether they're insane or on to something real.

Viva El BirdosOpen in a new window -- The best Cardinals blog. Updated daily. A quick digest of the latest info. I've tried, and will try again, to give up baseball entirely, but it's too ingrained from my formative years. So if I need a quick insight, it's here.

HockeyBuzz.comOpen in a new window -- If only hockey, and the Blues, had a Viva El Birdos. They don't, but this is a nice source anyway, if you can weed through the crap, often rough writing, and bizarre superfandom.

What Would Tyler Durden Do?Open in a new window -- Honestly, I don't know if this guy hates pop culture or loves it. (I myself hate it). Either way, this can be a hilarious source of
pop-culture mockery. And sometimes foul.

Slate.comOpen in a new window -- If you've read any of my blog, you know I go there a lot. The New York TimesOpen in a new window, too. What can I say, they reflect my menu of interests well.

Things change
As you may have noticed, the site has changed. Sampa, the free-site host, did a version 2 of some sort.

Despite an FAQ that made it sound like allowing one's site to go through v.2 surgery would be okay, there were several flexibilities that surprisingly disappeared with the click of a button. (e.g. I cannot believe sidebars like this one are even narrower than before.)

And I'm told -- miraculously! -- that the conversion cannot be undone. Truth be told, I'm actually quite pissed. But free is free. Sampa has otherwise been good to me.

So I need to sort through site "features" to see how I can make do. Except that I don't have the time at the moment, in the middle of graduate classes and Lighthousehockey.com. (btw, I've removed that Lighthouse RSS feed so that you're not clogged with random Islanders hockey gibberish).

But I promise to touch up the accessories when I get a chance, and return to irregularly scheduled blogging.
