Outer Banks 2006

Outer Banks, N.C. - July 2006
The sandy wind-swept land of the Wright Brothers' 'First Flight'™...the barrier islands between the Atlantic and the North Carolina sounds. Each year with my wife and her sister, I enjoy their beauty amid a nagging fear that a rising sea level will one day wipe them away. (Of course then the Midwest would be that much closer to the ocean. "So I figure I got that goin' for me...which is nice.")

Even though it's growing and touching on that dreaded "over-developed" status, the area's somewhat remote and weather-battered nature seems to keep it from becoming another Ocean City/Shores, U.S.A. Having a protected Cape Hatteras National Seashore along much of its extent doesn't hurt either.

Man it's a beautiful place. As you sit on the beach with your third book and your 15th drink of the week, the pelicans regularly cruise by in long lines just above the water. As the lead pelican flaps his wing one way or gives a subtle turn, each one follows in line like a procession of graceful dominos. I could watch them forever.

Things change
As you may have noticed, the site has changed. Sampa, the free-site host, did a version 2 of some sort.

Despite an FAQ that made it sound like allowing one's site to go through v.2 surgery would be okay, there were several flexibilities that surprisingly disappeared with the click of a button. (e.g. I cannot believe sidebars like this one are even narrower than before.)

And I'm told -- miraculously! -- that the conversion cannot be undone. Truth be told, I'm actually quite pissed. But free is free. Sampa has otherwise been good to me.

So I need to sort through site "features" to see how I can make do. Except that I don't have the time at the moment, in the middle of graduate classes and Lighthousehockey.com. (btw, I've removed that Lighthouse RSS feed so that you're not clogged with random Islanders hockey gibberish).

But I promise to touch up the accessories when I get a chance, and return to irregularly scheduled blogging.
